Clown & the Cosmic Quest

In this workshop, mime, clown, bouffon, and physical theater artist extraordinaire Dean Evans will help you shed your self-consciousness and heighten your natural sense of play. Using exercises in clowning, slapstick, and improvisation, this workshop will explore the cosmic nature of clown. By cultivating our natural curiosity we can learn to listen deeply to the recurrent and rhythmical pattern of coming and going, decline and regrowth, the push and pull of our audience. You'll experience the joy of vulnerability and the adventure being off balance as you begin to bumble through the cosmos with musicality. Be ready to move, have fun, and majorly f*ck around.

Dean Evans is an award winning performer, director, and master physical theater artist. Dean was named one of the top 50 'players' by New City magazine. They have performed around the world as a solo artist and with companies such as the Second City, iO, the Goodman, Cirque Du Soliel and many more. Dean is an ensemble member of the renowned performance art collective the Neo-Futurists where they wrote and performed groundbreaking original work. In 2019 Dean made their Off Broadway directorial debut with an ensemble called Mil Grus. Dean is currently the Artistic director of The Nonsemble in Los Angeles. Dean is also known for creating the entity who simply goes by Honeybuns. Honeybuns has enjoyed their own career performing in NYC, Chicago, Moscow, Ireland, Austin TX, and Los Angeles. Dean has created over a dozen full length theatrical productions, various immersive spectacles, 3 full length circuses, and dozens of comedic characters. Dean writes and directs in The Month Long Ham Festival every third Saturday of the month at the Elysian Theater. They have appeared on NBC, Russia's минута славы, the onion network, and various commercials and television. Dean produces and directs award winning digital content and films. Dean has been on faculty at Columbia College, The Celebration Barn, the Second City Training Center, Aloft circus arts, and the Actor's Gymnasium. They have taught as a guest artist at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Big Apple Circus Clown Care Unit, UIC, Oberlin College, the Ohio State University, Lake Forest College, Brooklyn Art Haus, The Neo-futurists and more. Dean was the Artistic Director of Chicago Physical Theater from 2009 to 2016. Dean currently teaches classes in Clown, Mime, Bouffon, and devising in Los Angeles.
